many of you who are reading my posts on a regular basis know by now, that I left my country of birth, Austria, in the year 2005, to allow myself a new beginning in an idyllic little country town in the highlands of Guatemala. You might also have followed my path in the last year, when strongly changed conditions in my immediate surrounding have made me rejoice and move away from that wonderful place that I thought would be my home till the end of my days on earth.
What might be new to you is the fact that my decision to leave was based on me identifying a suddenly intensively growing conquistador behavior in the incoming flood of new people in town. Aware, that this might look good on the surface of tourism income for all, i was also cristal clear that on a bigger picture it can only hurt the collective awakening of humanity into the Golden Age of Aquarius.
So today, I want to share some simple ideas how we can identify and therefore change the still deeply rotten roots of – manly white privilege behavior – that is bit by bit eating away on the healthy soil of us living in humane communities on planet earth.
How can I tell a story we already know too well? Her name was Africa. His was France. He colonized her, exploited her, silenced her, and even decades after it was supposed to have ended, still acted with a high hand in resolving her affairs in places like Côte d’Ivoire, a name she had been given because of her export products, not her own identity.
Her name was Asia. His was Europe. Her name was silence. His was power. Her name was poverty. His was wealth. Her name was Her, but what was hers? His name was His, and he presumed everything was his, including her, and he thought be could take her without asking and without consequences. It was a very old story, though its outcome had been changing a little in recent decades. And this time around the consequences are shaking a lot of foundations, all of which clearly needed shaking.
Who would ever write a fable as obvious, as heavy-handed as the story we’ve been given? His name was privilege, but hers was possibility. His was the same old story, but hers was a new one about the possibility of changing a story that remains unfinished, that includes all of us, that matters so much, that we will watch but also make and tell in the weeks, months, years, decades to come.
Let me translate that for you into a simple everyday life situation, showing how the root in a random person’s conquistador mindset allows to come into any given situation without asking for much information upfront, but immediately claiming the right to change everything to our convenience, that disturbes OUR life. We even came up with the idea to create laws, in order to protect our own egoistic and egocentric mindset!
This conversation was taken from the facebook page of a US citizen, who is living in the highlands of Guatemala since years, and just recently moved from one house in the same town to another:
post: I live in a kennel.. I would rather hear fireworks than fucking dogs forever.
answer: the new place?
post: where else would I be thinking I deserve to sleep at 11 PM ??????
packs of street dogs at least travel… in a few minutes they’re in the next block… barking at nothing ‘over there…. but no — dogs to the left of me / dogs to the right —- here I am – stuck in the middle … trying to come up with a [legal] solution to make them shut the fuck up…
answer: I feel for you but now I can’t get Stealers Wheel out of my head lol ??
When individuals and communities do not govern self, they risk being ruled by external forces that care less about the well-being of the village.
Colonialism. The enforced spread of the rule of reason. But who is going to spread it among the colonizers?
Can you imagine the feeling of being an oppressed colonial being addressed respectfully by a colonizer in the mother country?”
Ambeth OcampoDear ones, I hope this short reminder that the deep roots of colonialism are maybe unseen and so normalized within everyday behavior, that it might take a little digging to identify them clearly, but nevertheless that is what’s on the agenda for humanity, if we ever wanna reach a Golden Age of Aquarius for all beings on planet earth. So go and get the spade everyone!!
Love and Blessings
